Emergency Medicine--Our Stories
February 2017 to November 2018, Toronto, Canada
I stopped writing when I went to medical school. At the peak of my burnout from emergency medicine, I took up photography. In one of my documentary photography classes, almost on a whim, I decided to photograph my emergency department. Something unbelievable happened when I finally made the connection between stories and medicine. For years, I felt that my work as a doctor was unappreciated. I even considered leaving. It took a photograph for me to realize that we work in the narrow space between life and death. It's not glamorous work. But each caring act, when joined together, equals something great.
I left stories to become a doctor. Stories brought me back to medicine.
Story is my way home.
